Mid-Atlantic Wrestling 01/05/85

Note: I'm 23, and my first introduction to wrestling was the Monday Night War. I preferred WCW when I was little, and still do. My exposure to pre-late 90s wrestling is Jarrett's CWA. I'm going to give my first impressions of every promotion at the end of the post.

After a nice psychedelic intro, it cuts to the first match. Steve Casey versus Joel Deaton is already underway. It's a good technical wrestling contest so far. Nothing that Jim Cornette would call "Outlaw Mudshow" or "Cosplay wrestling". Nothing fancy but a good story was told in the ring. Casey picked up the win.

Magnum T.A. announces that he's coming for Wahoo Mcdaniel, and the United States Heavyweight Championship. The team American Starship face inferno 1 & 2. Coyote's made appearances in CWA, and goes on to be in a major wrestling faction in the future. American Starship won by submission. A fun little squash match.

Denny Brown versus Tommy Lane for the Junior Heavyweight title is next. Another strong wrestling contest with a less is better approach. Denny is your winner. I wonder, if he likes the Denny's diner chain?

James J. Dillon cuts a promo saying "No more nice guys" . The Longriders, and James J. Dillon want a piece of Rhodes, and Steamboat. The next match is 'Superstar" Billy Graham versus Brian Adias. He's manhandling Brian Adias, and making good use of the ropes. Brian fights back for a little bit. but it doesn't last. He's kicked by Paul Jones, and beaten by Billy outside the ring. Billy wins by submission.

Dusty says that change is coming in '85. Magnum T.A. versus the Super Destroyer is next. A contest ended with a belly to belly suplex. I was expecting this to be a squash match similar to  American Starship's match. But this was a nice surprise. Magnum is your winner.

"Superstar" Billy Graham wants to face Dusty Rhodes, Raging Bull, and Magnum T.A. Kung fu master, and the strongest wrestler on the face of the Earth. His promos are very good. Simple but very entertaining. Paul Jones claims that Billy Graham will take the belt off of Ric Flair.

Nikita Koloff versus Manny Fernandez starts after that segment. An excellent battle for supremacy between two heavyweights rages on. The show went end but the battle continued. Can Nikita recover from Manny's vicious assault? Will Manny's clever plan give him the win? Find out on the next episode of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling!

*DBZ music playing*
Some of you might get why I made a DBZ reference.

First Impression:

The format that's used is excellent, and doesn't take away from the action at all. The segments were there to complement the wrestling not distract from it. This is an issue with main roster WWE, Impact, and other promotions. NWA Powerrr's format isn't that different from CWA, and Mid-Atlantic. Which shouldn't be a surprise I suppose.

I can't really find anything wrong with this promotion at first glance. Billy's martial artist persona was interesting. It brought a little bit of that 80's WWF style to the Mid-Atlantic territory.
